Good grief How in the world could people not look around them today and see and realize just how vulnerable that we are. We're vulnerable physically we're vulnerable as a nation we see ourselves as the greatest nation in this world has ever known and folks we have seen in a matter of months how quickly this nation can be taken out how quickly the economy can destroy all things that we have grown to love and cherish as American.
In this world today and people would have to be blind people would have to be absolutely brain damaged to know and understand that our hope is not in this world.
Our hope is not in the things of this world. Our hope is not in a sign is coming up with a vaccine. Our hope is not in our doctors and our hospitals and and our hope is not in the government.
Our hope is in no one but in Christ alone and if we're. Our hope in all of these things of the world. The creator of all things in this world, we can trust him and we can trust him as the head of the church to continue to build his church until he comes back to take us home.
This is not a setback. This is a set up and I'm looking forward to what he has set us up to do in the days ahead and I don't know about you.
Your head stuck in a stinking sand if all of this doesn't make you realize that this could very easily be ushering in the last days as we know it in this world and you can call me old-fashioned and you can call me crazy but when the role is called up under I'll be there and I believe it's coming sooner rather than later.
And I believe that it's only fitting that we've been in first Peter all this time and right now we find ourselves in first Peter verse seven of Chapter four today and look at what Peter says.
The end of all things is near. I'm not a prophet, but God's word is true You can count on it. You can Bank on it.
Our hope is in it and Peter says the end. Of all things. It's this mindset of you know what I don't belong here anyway this world is it is not my home friends you and I were created for heaven.
We weren't. In the United States of America, we weren't created for this world you and I were created for heaven and heaven was created for us and so fortunately for the Christian fortunately for us as followers of Jesus Christ forcefully for us the end is near and you may look at this and you may scoff and say well, Peter wrote this years ago he obviously didn't have a clue, but here's the deal regardless.
Jesus returns your one day closer to it right now than you were yesterday, We're one day closer to his return, then we have ever been and you're also one day closer to your death than you were yesterday and that too is when you will also meet Jesus so it is near and and like we saw last week in verse two because of the limited time that you and I have remaining and I'll just tell you I can tell by looking at some of you some of your times more limited than mine huh.
And so we're reminded because of the limited time that we have remaining that our motivation should be even more increased to serve Jesus and do the things that he's called us to do while we're here on this Earth because when our time is up either in death or he blows the trumpet and and calls us all home, We're gonna stand before him and give an account of how we lived our lives and who we lived our lives for so Scripture urges us to.
Prepared for the end of our life, whether it's the return of Jesus by your own death, we should live our life in light of the fact that the end is near as Peter reminds us and and and here's what said we had this great opportunity.
I'm gonna get on my soapbox here for just a minute we have this great opportunity before us as the church today. Wouldn't you agree?
I mean when you agree, we have an incredible opportunity before us as the. Of Christ to preach and share the good news of Jesus Christ and that the end is near and that everybody's gonna spend eternity somewhere and we have this great opportunity before us as the church and we're busy debating over whether Covid- 19 is a hoax or if it's not, we're busy debating over whether we ought to be wearing mask or whether we shouldn't be wearing mask and when we Politics and when we focus on our personal comfort and our personal opinion and our personal conviction, then friends we have lost our focus when we're not focusing on the things of Jesus Christ.
We're not focusing on anything that amounts to a Hill of beans is grandma used to say we've lost our focus and sadly today there are a lot of people who call themselves followers of Jesus Christ and they call themselves Christians today.
Who don't live their lives like they've got their eyes on Jesus. They're not living their lives like he's coming again and that the end is near, but here's the deal.
We can argue argue all day long about mask We can argue all day long about the Cove We can protest or we can stay silent we can vote or we cannot vote we can go to church in person or we can watch it online but the truth of the matter.
This Jesus said in Luke be ready because the Son of Man will come at an hour when no one expects him. That's our message.
That's our hope. That's our warning as followers of Jesus Christ and here's the deal God in His wisdom doesn't tell us today that he's coming back God in His wisdom doesn't tell us the date of our death, but he does tell us this you better be ready you better be ready.
For either event and live your life for Jesus while you have life to live and then Peter goes on here. We've seen this all throughout this letter.
He's just trying to help us stay focused right advice on how to be ready for the end of our life or the end of time whichever should come first and and and so if we do these things then Peter says we will be ready.
And he goes on to say in verse seven, he says the end is near and he says be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.
Don't miss this Jesus said there in Luke be ready, Peter says over and over again be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray and I've shared this time and time and time again but prayer is to your soul.
What oxygen is to your body. Complain about the mask and says it's just like I can't breathe. I'm let me tell you something this morning if you're not praying to God, then you're not able to spiritually breathe either prayer is to your spiritual life.
What oxygen is to your physical body and there is no life without our spiritual lives depend on our prayer lives and if you're not praying, then you're probably sick and probably.
Spiritually and I know this because I've been there, I know this because I've tested this. I know this because I've got experience with this.
That's why I will forever encourage you to be people of prayer and Peter says. Keep your mind alert and be of sober mind so that you may pray We also saw Peter if you remember back in chapter one, we saw him mentioned this to us here, he says.
Be alert and of sober mind in Chapter one in verse We're gonna see it in the next chapter. After five, and and and and this basically means this to be careful about letting the things of the world and the ways of the world and intoxicated or cloud your way of thinking.
I've got I got a lot of people with a lot of opinions right, We can't let all that's going on around us all the noise and all the craziness that's going on around us and intoxicate our cloud our minds from what we've been called and who we've been called to this followers of Jesus Christ.
Prayer is what gives us full and total access to the resources of God in our lives that we need to be able to stay focus and do what he's called us to do.
That we can't pray properly if our minds aren't focused on the things of God we have to be on guard We have to be ready. We have to be alert. There are a lot of things that are going on around us right now, folks.
There's a lot of things. I was talking to somebody that's got a whole lot more years on their life. Then I got on mine and they said you know what I've been a long time I've never seen anything like this.
There's a lot going on around us to distract us and and get our focus off what it needs to be on, but keeping our minds right keeping our minds focused will increase our prayer effectiveness and this is so important as we realize that the end is near and.
Is the greatest resource and gives us the greatest access to the greatest power that there is folks. Let's see what else Peter tells us here look at verse eight, he says above all above all, which means what.
Alright this right here. Probably be placed before everything else that I've set up to this point and Peter says above all. It's the trait of a follower of Jesus Christ.
They were known back in the New Testament they didn't have digital signs out in front of the church. They didn't have Facebook and Instagram and email and all these things that we have today see the way that people found out and knew who were followers of Jesus Christ was by how they treated other people.
Right to the point of sacrificially living and giving for the well being of other people. This is the word picture that we're given here.
This a better translation might be this. It's to love at full strength or the love at boy. Here's a concept to love at maximum effort.
That's how Peter says we are to love. It's loving without. Reservation It's loving without hesitation and this is so important so important in the context of the church and the body of Christ because when this kind of love shows up in the body of Christ when this kind of love shows up in people who call themselves a Christian, you know what people are drawn to that people will notice that people will recognize that and say that person responds.
And everything that they does is different from the rest of the world that they don't join in all the things and all the you know all the chaos that the world has to offer.
They won't be a part of that. They aren't a part of that and when this kind of love shows up in the lives of God's people, let me tell you what happens.
Forgiveness that he showed us and let me tell you something when that happens past hurts past words and past harmful actions will be forgiven.
That's what deep love does. That's what deep love looks like and we'll look like in our world today and let me tell you something when we love others deeply the way that we've been called to love others deeply.
Pointing out their fault will stop pointing out their ignorance will stop pointing out the way they vote right, We'll stop pointing out all the things that they've done wrong, Peter says.
Don't miss this love this deep love covers a multitude of sins right when we love deeply. We'll love the way that Christ loved us and we'll accept unconditionally just like he accepted you and I unconditional.
It was without condition and that's good preaching by Peter and we all agree, but let's be honest today it's easier to preach than to do.
I ain't perfect. None of you are either. I hate to tell you some of you are drowns tilted a little this morning but.
I'll be honest, this is not my natural default here. This is not how I think this is not how I naturally wanna respond because here's the deal.
Let's let's just be honest of what it is, let's say I have a bad day. Well, there's a reason that I do that right, It's because I've had a.
And I'm stressed there's a reason that I will snap back. There's there's a reason why I've acted the way I've acted but if you snap at me.
You're hateful. You snap at me, you're just mad you're angry. What's Up Your you know you know. If we're late for an appointment.
Well, it's because we're busy. We've had a hectic day. We had a lot on our schedule today and I'm just sorry. I couldn't get there when I told you I was gonna be there.
Huh There you're responsible or they're lazy or they're just not considered there are times more important. There are times more valuable than my time right you see what we do we can justify and make our shortcomings not.
Quite as bad as we can point out the shortcomings of of the people. Deep love means that we will be as gentle when seeing the falls of other people as we are with our own fault we'll look at em the same and we all have faults but here's the deal.
Jesus didn't tell us to judge one another, he told us to love one another. Love deeply at full strength with maximum capacity. That's how we are to love.
Can I? Morning cuz I've asked myself this is I've been preparing for it. Oh, especially now. It may be the only time they get to see the love of God before he comes.
Peter gives us his in verse nine. I like this I like I love this. I just throws this in there and what it says offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
So Peter's saying the end is near. That's what being hospitable does. That means being hospitable, it is giving somebody a place to stay being hospitable.
It is giving someone. To be hospitable to someone is just simply willing to be quiet long enough to listen to what they have to say.
Hospitality would have been welcomed back then and needed for those who were being forced from their homes. They were being forced to flee their homes and from their cities just to try to save the lives of themselves and their family members.
Come to my home right they would be hospitable to people providing lodging and meals and basically doing this sometimes for people that they didn't even know complete strangers to them and Peter follows this by saying and oh by the way when you do this don't complain about it.
So what are some reasons we might complain about helping someone what? Reasons that we might complain about helping others well, maybe the cost that's Associated with it right because typically when we help somebody else or we're hospitable to somebody else, it costs us a little something to be able to do that.
Saying thanks they should've said thank you. More times than what they did, even you know. They just come keep coming back for more right.
It seems like we can't do enough for that person or to help that person and and at times honestly this can cause stress This can cause hard feelings.
Peter understood this alright. So Peter says this to prepare for your end right. Be hospitable to others and don't complain about doing the work of Jesus while you're here doing the work of Jesus because that's what it's all about to begin with right.
That's your purpose. That is what we are supposed to do is followers of Jesus Christ. Peter carries on with this thought as we move in to verse 10 verse, 10 and 11, He says each of you, which means what.
Each of us. We are to use our spiritual gifts to do what to serve. Others and we all have a gift to be used to serve Christ on this Earth until he comes or until our life ends right God custom-designed you now, I know you're looking in the mirror and have your doubts right God custom designed you for a purpose.
We talk about it all the time you were created on purpose for a purpose you have my friend. You have a specific assignment that he created you.
And he created you to do and God only made thank the Lord. He only made one version of me right, but I'm even more thankful he only made one version of you.
I'm kidding line up. I've had people say before you know, I don't know what my gift is. I'll tell you there's one simple way to figure it out.
I've shared this for years. I've shared it with teenagers. I've shared it with kids. I've shared it with y'all before, but your gift is this.
If you don't know what your gift is. Here's the way to figure out what it is. It's something that you enjoy doing and you do well.
What is? That you enjoy doing that you have consistently done well because whatever that is, that's probably the gift that you have that Jesus wants you to use to do what.
Minister to others and maybe you look across your life and you go. You and God I don't know. But I would encourage you this if you don't know what your gift is start praying that God will show you what it is because I assure you he has a gift.
You have a talent. You have a purpose. You have a unique assignment because he created you.
